Autoglym Liquid Clay

What is it:

A fallout remover from the Autoglym Professional range which Autoglym claim leaves a smooth finish for polishing whilst speeding up the valeting process, safely removing contaminates such as industrial fallout.

How we Tested it:

Autoglym themselves were kind enough to send us 5 litres of the new liquid clay to put to the test. We have used it on multiple vehicles both on the bodywork and wheels. Main observations were the effectiveness of the product at removing contamination, reaction times and the value offered by the product.

We Liked:

• The best fallout remover we have used to date in terms of pure contaminant removal.
• Very fast reaction time, particularly for heavier areas of fallout such as wheels.
• Thick clingy liquid allows the product to hold on to surfaces and not run off, aiding effectiveness.
• Smells better than conventional fallout removing products.
• A little goes a long way. Economical compared to rivals.

We Didn’t like:

• The branding of the product is all wrong. Implication is that it does the same job as clay. Clay is still very much needed as well as Liquid Clay to remove bonded contaminates.
• Pleasant citrus smell is an optimistic claim… it smells better than others but not what one would call pleasant.
• One of the more expensive fallout removers.

Overall

We have taken some time to consider how to evaluate this product and give it a score that best suits it. If Autoglym had come to the market with a colour changing fallout remover and marketed it purely as this, the product has potential to be rated as a 10/10. By calling it liquid clay, we see what they were trying to do and in one sense it’s a clever name but unfortunately on the other hand it is misinforming and unclear. The product branding reads as though the product could replace clay by doing the same job and leaves a smooth finish. Whilst true of subsurface and surface ferrous deposits, it won’t remove many of the bonded contaminates that clay will remove. As such, like other fallout removers it needs to ideally be used before or after a clay treatment.

It sounds as though we are being overly critical and that isn’t fair to what is genuinely the best fallout remover we have used on the market today. As an overall package, refinements are needed to the branding.
