What is it:

Firstly, let's talk about what the Ryobi ONE+ system is - The ONE+ system is essentially where you can have a single battery that can power a range of tools. There are currently 100+ tools that can be powered using the same battery in Ryobi's range, anything from a hedge trimmer to a power drill. Generally, a good proportion of a cordless tool's cost is the battery, so why not have one that you can move around multiple tools? Seems to make sense, so much so, that Ryobi are not the only one jumping on this idea.

So, now you know what the ONE+ system is let's talk about Ryobi's Pressure Inflator offering. The R18PI-0 is an analogue pump that is generally sold as just the 'body only' which means by default you don't get a battery with it. This has its advantages as you can pick up the body for around £35 at the time of writing.

It's classed as a high-pressure pump and can go up to 150PSI for those higher-pressure jobs. It features a 50cm hose that can be clipped onto the casing to keep it tidy when not being used. It is also supplied with some additional nozzles/needles clipped onto the casing for pumping sports equipment such as footballs.

The pump also comes with a 3-year warranty giving you peace of mind that should any problems arise you would be able to get them solved.

How we tested it:

We tested it on not only car tyres but also various other applications such as bike tyres and a football.

We also put the claim of being capable of taking a car tyre from 25 psi to 32 psi in just 2 minutes.

We Liked:

It feels strong and well-made. We've tested a range of other cordless pumps and some of the cheaper ones feel like they wouldn't last - this pump feels like it will.
As with any 'one battery' system, being able to purchase a range of tools that can use the same battery will keep costs down overall, meaning the body can be picked up for a sensible price considering the quality.
Comes with those extra nozzles for jobs that aren't a car tyre.
The quick airflow means that topping up your tyres won't take long at all.

We Didn't Like:

Having to hold the trigger down while in use is a bit of a pain - it would be great if you were able to allow it to continue pumping hands free by pressing a separate button for example
It can be hard to determine an accurate reading from the gauge as you have to make sure you look at the needle straight on, which is the same for any analogue gauge, but nonetheless, it was fairly accurate when we checked it afterwards.

Overall:

Overall, what really sticks with us is the build quality of the pump (and in fact other Ryobi products we've also used), it feels like it would stand the test of time. It appears to be powerful enough for most tasks you can throw at it and for topping up your car tyres we were able to go from 25 psi to 32 psi (approx.) in around 1 minute 30 seconds which is 30 seconds quicker than their claim on the box - perhaps due to a lower profile tyre there?

The only real bugbears are what you would find on any analogue pump - the gauges are never as accurate as a digital one and a digital one would likely come with a feature to automatically pump up till a certain pressure.

So, sizing this up against other analogue pumps, the portability, quality and performance is very good - it's sensibly priced for its build quality along with a 3-year warranty to back it up, so it's a great option.

I think if we were going to go for one, we'd probably spend a little bit more and maybe for the digital version (R18MI-0) which looks excellent and if it matches the build quality of this one then it's a winner.
