What We Say

What is it?

The Nextbase 101 Go is the budget dashcams that we have tested. Nextbase describe it as ‘Record in 720p HD with the Nextbase InCarCam 101 which features a 120 degree Ultra wide viewing angle to record every unexpected moment. It has a bright, clear 2 inch LED screen for easy viewing and provides you with instant evidence to support insurance claims which help prove an incident was not your fault.’.

It’s a small compact dashcam weighing just 56g that fits comfortably behind your rearview mirror with the supplied suction windscreen mount. It’s very simple to get up and running, attached to the windscreen, route the power cable around your windscreen to your cigarette lighter and you’re good to go!

Like most dashcams now a days, the Nextbase 101 Go has a G Sensor that detects impacts automatically and will protect the current recording to prevent from being overwritten, but you can press the incident button on the front of the device should you not be involved in an incident but wish to protect the recording.

The built in 2” LCD screen means that you can review recordings at the roadside, however you will struggle to see too much on it, especially if you are looking for registration plates – you would be better waiting until it can be plugged into a computer. However, the LCD screen is perfectly sufficient for going through the menus.

There’s no software supplied with the 101 Go, but you can plug the device into a PC with the supplied USB cable and select Mass Storage mode on the screen of the device – this will allow you to browse the recordings. Protected recordings are prefixed with the letters ‘PRO’ at the beginning of their filename, making it easy to find important footage.

The dashcam records at a video resolution of 720p at 30fps and has a 120 degrees camera recording field.

This was one of the mid-range dashcams we tested that has a RRP of £49.00.

How we tested it?

We tested the dashcam individually over a period of time so we got an idea of what it was really like to put up with on a daily basis. We followed the manufacturer’s recommendations when setting up the dashcam. We tested it in both daytime and nighttime.

We Liked:

  • It has simple setup, you can just plug and play
  • It has an LCD screen, although small, allows you to preview clips on the go.
  • Small enough to tuck out of the way behind your rear view mirror
  • The recordings are good for a 720p dashcam

We didn’t Like:

  • Lacks features such as GPS and speed.
  • Only records up to 720p video quality

Overall:

Overall, the Nextbase 101 Go is a good budget dashcam – it serves the purpose, that it provides a safety net for proving the cause of an accident – but lacks features such as GPS location and speed data. If you’re only looking to spend around £50, then yes, it’s a good budget dashcam, if you have a bit more to spend maybe look at the 312GW model instead just to get the additional features and higher recording quality.
